Hypromellose (HPMC)

1. Raw Material 
Hypromellose, also called HPMC or hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, utilizes a natural polymer (purified cotton) as raw material. It is a kind of non-ionic cellulose ether.

2. Properties 
HPMC is a white powder without odor, toxicity or taste. It is dissolved in cold water and forms a transparent viscous solution.

3. Characteristics 
Prominent characteristics of HPMC include superb water retention, thickening, emulsifying, film-forming, suspension, adsorption, jelling, surface activity, colloid-protection, and more.

4. Functions and Applications 
Hypromellose is often used as a colloid stabilizer, suspending agent, or water retention agent. It can improve the adhesive force, surface hardness, and softness.

Additionally, it provides mortar with excellent operating performance and anti-slide ability. HPMC is applicable to cement, lime and gypsum-based plaster mortar, adhesive mortar, etc.

Chemical Properties 
1. Carbonization temperature: 280-300℃

2. Apparent density: 0.25-0.70g/cm³

3. Color-changing temperature: 190-200℃

4. Surface tension: 42-56dyn/cm (2% Aqueous Solution)

5. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is soluble in water and some solvents such as an appropriate proportion of ethanol/water, propanol/water, etc. Its aqueous solution has surface activity. Different products have distinct gelling temperature. Lower solubility causes higher viscosity. The solubility in water will not be affected by pH value.

6. Fewer methoxy groups in HPMC leads to higher gelling temperature, lower solubility in water, and lower surface activity.

7. Other features of HPMC include great pH stability, size stability, cohesive property, and strong resistance to enzyme, among others.

Recommended Dosage 
The recommended dosage of hypromellose is generally 0.2 to 0.6% of total amount. It is 0.4 to 0.6% in thermal mortar system, 0.3 to 0.5% in indoor putty, 0.25 to 0.4% in ceramic tile adhesive, as well as 0.2 to 0.3% in mortar.

Storage 
Hypromellose should be stored in a waterproof, moistureproof, and fireproof place. Its storage life is three years.

Security and Environmental Protection 
HPMC pertains to a non-dangerous product in accordance with Gefahrstoffverordnung standard. The accident prevention rules about the protection against dust (VBG No.119) must be followed. HPMC is rated as ST1 grade. The security data sheet can be given according to specific requirements.
